Movie Review — — — Dune 2
Because I don’t know the original content of “Dune”, I can’t judge whether it fits the original author’s taste. But I can talk about what I saw in “Dune” and how I “viewed” a movie.
First, the time I watched it was on February 28th. My mind was empty, idle, so I thought about going to see a movie. I always like movies with special meanings — but it’s like reading a book, how can you know in advance? So watching a movie is a huge time investment. Because you can flip through a book, but not a movie. Well, you can, but it’s embarrassing. And the cost of watching a movie is the price of a book.
According to the sunk cost, obviously we always choose to stick to the chair and not leave.
At this point, my criterion was born: the number of times the pending items circled in my mind is the negative value of this movie to me.
Alright, enough said. Let’s talk about “Dune II”. “Dune I” was seen in Barcelona. At both time points, I was almost the same: unemployed, wandering — a friend said, “taste life”.
The scale of “Dune II” is huge, besides the visual effects, the sound is even more startling. Many times, I think it’s probably because of the sound, so it’s especially good.
The struggles of all parties and the mysteries of the male protagonist’s origin are all solved one by one. If I were to say keywords, I would say: bloodline, war, love. The universal way of movies.
The male protagonist used to be a prince. His father was killed, so he and his mother fled to this planet, fell in love with a girl, but because his mother was a member of the sisterhood, after the protagonist gained power, he broke his original oath of “not pursuing power” in the war by killing his father’s proud deputy, thus gaining the throne, marrying his own sister, and betraying love.
It’s like a science fiction version of Greek mythology and court struggles, plus Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” — the time is 10110, are humans still there?
I imagine that future versions can evolve more times, and ChatGPT can come up with more shocking content. But that’s it.
The sisterhood is an organization composed of blood ties based on certain mysterious laws, responsible for acting as prophecy masters and nurturing various crown princes. But whether the prophecy is true or false is like throwing divination sticks, there is no answer. Most of the time, it’s like planning and advising, helping to assist a kingdom.
On the planet Akkaris, it’s a barren desert, you can’t see any creatures — oh, except for the sand dunes. But beneath the sand dunes, there are sandworms crawling. The male protagonist learns how to control “nature” here — the desert — with the Freman people.
The desert here makes me yearn for it because of the wind, because of the sudden control like waves, and because of the temples and pools in the desert.
When I watched this movie, I tried to remember the pending items in my mind, but the screen was too big, the effects were too much, and you couldn’t breathe — one scene after another, you watch it, unable to think about predicting the plot, there are indeed unexpected places — the bloodline of the male protagonist.
But when I detached myself to watch, Einstein said he couldn’t predict World War III, but he could imagine World War IV being fought with stones and firearms.
And the first and second world wars were both because of scarce resources, so by the reason of bloodline, they rushed into other people’s homes and caused wars.
So this is probably the tenth interstellar war, humans can evolve to the point of disappearing. By then, Musk has already sent all humans to Mars, then astronomers have discovered more habitable planets, Silicon Valley tycoons have first put themselves into immortal cryogenic tubes, then sent to planets that take light years to reach, and then unlock the switch of life.
So where does bloodline go? In my lifetime? Maybe not.
But in such a world, look, the Freman are seen as rats by others, hiding in the desert. But they are equal, away from power, make good use of scarce resources, and do not claim the spice for themselves. In the male protagonist’s impassioned speech, the female protagonist loudly said, “Faith is a tool used to control people’s hearts!”
She is clear-headed and capable. She doesn’t need the male protagonist. But the male protagonist needs her.
And other kingdoms need to control people by the reason of bloodline, while the sisterhood controls and dissects men with sex and prophecy, and gives birth to babies, naming them crown princes. The male protagonist’s mother is one of them.
The struggle between men and women, power, and human nature in the post-human era.
Is it good? I don’t know. Every movie is an investment, but I still prefer reading books.
